Hammer Prices and Museum Acquisitions

The first Live Auction of the year in Lyngby has just come to an end, having produced a large number of surprising hammer prices and museum acquisitions. The real high jumper was a ceramic sculpture by Axel Salto, which went for an impressive hammer price of DKK 2.1 million.

We welcomed the spring with a preview featuring a host of talks and music ahead of a magnificent Live Auction at our new auction house in Lyngby. People turned up in droves to see the works of art, design classics, antiques, jewellery and wristwatches on display, which later went under the hammer.

The Auction’s High Jumpers

The Live Auction very much confirmed that Danish decorative art is highly sought after by collectors all over the world and that Axel Salto’s works are in a class of their own. The highest hammer price of DKK 2.1 million was achieved for his sculpture “Den Tingene iboende Kraft” (The Inherent Power of Things). Danish Golden Age art is likewise in high demand, and Wilhelm Bendz’s self-portrait from 1826 fetched the auction’s second highest hammer price of DKK 1.4 million. At our themed “Pioneering Women Artists” auction, there were particularly surprising hammer prices on four works by Rita Kernn-Larsen, led by the work “Opvågning” (Awakening) from the 1930s, which fetched a hammer price of DKK 450,000. The renowned watch brand Urban Jürgensen was behind one of the auction’s wristwatches which sold for twice the estimate with a hammer price of DKK 400,000. Among the classic antiques, an 18th-century “bishop’s bowl” from Store Kongensgade faience factory fetched the most impressive hammer price of DKK 220,000.

Astrid Holm: Standing female model. Acquired by Fuglsang Kunstmuseum for a hammer price of DKK 55,000.

Museums Buying Art at Auction

The buyers at our Live Auctions are often Danish and international museums. This time, eight works of art were acquired by a museum, and we’ve been given permission to publish the names of five of them. Three of these acquisitions took place at our themed “Pioneering Women Artists” auction, where Fuglsang Kunstmuseum purchased Astrid Holm’s motif of a standing female nude. Gerda Wegener’s two small paintings “På balkonen” (On the Balcony) and “Udsigt over bjerge” (View Over Mountains) are destined for The Museum of National History at Frederiksborg Castle, while the artist Edele Christiane Margreta Schreiber’s painting entitled “En norsk Bondepige” (A Norwegian Peasant Girl) appropriately went to the National Museum in Oslo. Another Norwegian museum, Vestfoldmuseene/Larvik Museum, outbid all the others on a somewhat older work, i.e. Jens Juel’s portrait of Anna Joachima Danneskiold-Laurvigen. Last, but not least, we were bound for northern West Jutland with I.P. Møller’s depiction of a painter in the dunes at Harboøre, which went to Lemvig Museum. We are as yet unable to publish the remaining museum acquisitions at our auction, but we will continue to update our list as soon as this becomes possible. We’d like to congratulate the museums on their latest acquisitions.
